Hi,
I was in London this weekend and bought tickets from a ticket booth on the north side of Leicester Sq to see Wicked that evening (which was amazing, def worth seeing) . When I was queueing, the person in front of me bought tickets for a future date, so yes, they do sell advance tickets. Maybe they aren't discounted as heavily until the day of the performance.

You have the main ticket booth in the centre of Leicester sq, but there are lots of other smaller vendors dotted all around the Square. So shop around, but be sensible and always buy from an authorised dealer, and ask them to show you on a seating plan where you will be sitting.
References :
I think tickets from Leicester Square are only for that day, and are subject to availability.
The only thing I've found is to buy cheap tickets for a matinee, and if there aren't many people there, they tell you to upgrade into the dearer seats.
