In this post I want to differentiate between cheap theatre tickets and cheap seats. First, what are the “cheap seats”?
Cheap seats in the theatre
The cheap seats in each theatre are those where the live theatre experience is lessened to some extent, either by being a long way back from the stage, by being up in the ‘gods’ with a downward perspective or else by having a restricted view of the performance due to the interior design of the theatre building. Remember that most if not all of the old theatres in London’s theatreland were built during the victorian era before modern contructions methods, so they often have large pillars holding the upper tiers and roof up. That’s a good thing, because you wouldn’t want the theatre to collapse during a performance, but it does mean that there are some tickets available which have a very good reason for being at the very bottom end of the price band. These cheap seats can be great for some shows, particularly the classic musicals, but only if you know about it beforehand, so as not to be disappointed when you finally get seated in the auditorium.
Cheap Theatre Tickets
The real deal though, is to book good seats at the best prices. A small quantity of cheap theatre tickets might be available for same day performances, but in general a lot of the best seats are bought up in bulk way in advance and then sold on. It’s almost like a futures commodity market, with agencies betting on the longevity and future popularity of a new show, before the critics give it a mauling. You can take advantage of the block booked seats by checking out all of the theatre breaks and theatre meal deals websites online, with a good possibility of getting best seats with a hotel or meal combined into a very reasonable package which makes the cheap theatre tickets themselves seem like a bargain.

First the bad news. It’s a long standing piece of British mythology that there’s a plentiful supply of cheap theatre tickets available for any top London show if you just know where to look and are willing to see a show on the same day as you buy the cheap tickets. This myth has generated a whole series of discount ticket shops around Leicester Square but I’m afraid all they are mostly selling is in fact tickets for the cheap seats.
The good news is that half price tickets for the best seats do become available for certain shows on a same day basis, but there is a fair bit of effort involved in queuing up at the only official half price ticket booth or else at the theatres them on the morning of the show. See the Offical TKTS website for the limited list of today’s cheap theatre tickets
Another way to get cheap theatre tickets is to buy them as part of package especially when there are special offers on such as during February to March and in July and August. At these times you may be able to get a free West End restaurant meal or even a free London hotel deal included in the overall price, which if you factor in to the overall expenses can make for some extremely cheap theatre tickets indeed.
It’s always worth checking the online prices for special dates as well, for example if a new show is out then you can usually pick up cheap tickets for good seats during the early period of the run, such as in the week or two running up to the official opening night. You then get to tell all your friends what you thought of the musical before even the major critics reviews are printed!
