Looking for the site which is consistently the cheapest (ticket price, service charge, postage), most reliable and has the best access to tickets. Similar opinions on theatre / hotel package sites would be welcome as well i.e. standard of hotel, total price
Based on actual experience please, rather than a random Google search.
Cheers

We are planning a trip there in June. We're very interested in seeing the musicals Wicked and The Lord of the Rings. Also would like to see Equus. Should we book in advance? Wait until we are there and go to the box office or a ticket agency??
You're asking about two conflicting things here–CHEAP tickets and AVAILABLE tickets to three very popular shows.
If you want to guarantee you get to see them all, get tickets in advance. Either use a travel agent to book you a package or find the theatres themselves on the internet and use a credit card to book tickets over the phone.
If you want to see them cheaply, you can shoot for last-minute ("standby") tickets. If you or a member of your party is a student, theatres in the UK also sometimes have cheaper tickets (especially on standby) for that population. In either case, students or no, ask the individual theatres what their standby policies are. Many theatres keep a number of tickets to release on standby a matter of hours or minutes before curtain. Some theatres also sell in this manner the last-minute tickets of patrons who don't show up.
However, cheap is going to equal risky and time-consuming–you trade price for the high probability that what you want to see won't be available, or that you might have to queue for a while to get your tickets. Tickets for those particular shows are going to be very popular–especially for Equus as long as Mr. Radcliffe's appearing–so there are likely to be fewer cheapies. After all, theatres know they can sell the seats for higher prices and still sell out. You'll have to decide for yourself whether you priority is the price or guaranteed seats or time invested.
One last bit of advice–remember that if you buy anything directly from overseas, including tickets, you're affected by the exchange rates at the time of your purchase. That's not such a big deal for small items, but could potentially be a big price change for several tickets bought for several shows that expensive. If you buy from here, it might be worth your while to keep an eye on the exhange rates for a couple days prior to purchase.

I want to get the best deals on plays and musicals playing in London
Most theatres have standby for OAPs, students and Westminster residents, but the very popular plays don't have to offer special deals as they sell out anyway. You can just turn up at most theatres one hour before showtime, produce a student card, and get about half off the best tickets, or more – eg: £17 for a £42 ticket as I got at one theatre. However if you want to pay as little as possible, the cheapest seats at the back of the theatre will still cost less than the standby tickets but the view won't be as good. This is something I wished I had known about when I was a student, so take advantage of it.

The best place could be online, or else the ticket booth in leicester square, but be warned get there early, as they do have long queues, first come first serve, but it is worth it as you do get cheaper tickets, much cheaper then the ticket touts.

I'm from the US, and I have a student ID. I'll be in London for the first two weeks of April. I mostly like musicals, so show recommendations are welcome too! (already have tix to Billy Elliot and Mary Poppins)
The person who actually gives the best answer will get the vote. That is all.
One way of getting inexpensive tickets to West End is to go to Leicester Square. There are a number of booths offering half price tickets to several productions. Take note, however, that half price deals are usually only available for the less popular shows, and that for popular productions (like the Phantom of the Opera) or shows that have recently opened, you may not be able to get half price tickets. Half price ticket booths normally take a small commission for each ticket purchased.
Another possibility is to go to the Theatre itself about an hour before the show and hope for return tickets which become available when people cancel their bookings. These tickets are usually offered at a discount.
